The following joint statement was issued today by the Mississauga Residents’ Associations Network (MIRANET) and the Residents’ Associations of East Oakville

"Last week, 500 concerned citizens attended Mayor McCallion’s Public Meeting and Press Conference (September 14) regarding the 850 MW power plant proposed for the Clarkson / Oakville Airshed, which has been proven to be toxic by the Ministry of the Environment’s Clarkson Airshed Study.

Citizens are now calling for the procurement process of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to be stopped and an investigation conducted into a blatant conflict of interest that has destroyed the community’s faith in the public process.

Not present at the Public Meeting, though specifically invited, was John Beck, Chair of the Ontario Power Authority (promoted by Premier Dalton McGuinty in 2007).  John Beck is also Chair and CEO of Aecon Group Inc., the largest publicly traded construction and infrastructure development company in Canada, which builds power plants in Ontario.  http://www.aecon.com/

John Beck states in his Letter to the Editor in today’s Toronto Star – “Conflict not an issue: OPA chair”:

“During my time on the board, the other nine directors and I have drawn very distinct lines with respect to any matter where there could be perceived to be a conflict of interest with my outside business activities.  Indeed, I have recused myself from board meetings 16 times in the 119 board and committee meetings since I joined the board to avoid such a perceived conflict. This protocol will continue to be applied when directors discuss the proposed natural gas plant in the southwest GTA.”
